Electric motors are the largest single consumer of electricity in industry. Choosing a higher efficiency class is the most direct way to reduce the running cost of a drive.

IEC 60034-30-1:2014 defines the efficiency classes for line-operated AC motors. Under this standard, motors below 0.75 kW must meet at least IE1, and motors of 0.75 kW and above must meet at least IE3.
Bernati's three-phase ranges are rated to this standard: BMT in IE1, IE3 and IE4, and BCT in IE3 and IE4. IE3 and IE4 motors are fitted with a positive-temperature-coefficient (PTC) thermistor that signals the control unit when winding temperature reaches the limit of insulation class F, protecting the motor and extending its life.
Efficiency is only one part of the total cost of a drive. A motor running for several thousand hours a year at partial load, or coupled to an oversized gearbox, wastes energy that a better selection would avoid. The catalogues publish efficiency at 100 %, 75 % and 50 % load for every rating, so a selection can be made on the real duty rather than the nameplate value.
